On 26 September 2026 we looked at the homepages of 30 Zambian universities. 28 of them link to an online application. Only 8 give a visitor an instant way to ask a question, through a WhatsApp link or a live chat. None of the 8 public universities has a WhatsApp link on its homepage.

Applying has moved online almost everywhere. Asking has not. An applicant who wants to know whether their results are enough for Medicine, or what the fees are for a distance programme, usually finds a phone number that will not be answered until the next working day.

Why it matters now

Speed is becoming part of what universities offer. Some private universities in Zambia now advertise that an application sent on WhatsApp gets an admission letter within 48 hours. In July, the Higher Education Authority ran a workshop on quality assurance in the era of digital transformation and AI, covering admissions and student records as well as teaching.

When the website gives no way to ask, applicants go looking for any number they can find. The question then lands on a staff member's personal phone, where nobody else can see what was answered or promised.

What a good setup looks like

You do not need a new system to close this gap. Four things cover most of it:

  1. One official WhatsApp number, linked from the homepage. A wa.me link opens a chat in one tap on any phone.
  2. Answers taken from your own documents. The prospectus, the fee schedule and the intake dates. If a question is not covered, the reply should say so and pass the chat to a person.
  3. A shared inbox, not a shared phone. Several admissions staff answer from one number, and everyone can see every reply.
  4. Fees one click from the homepage. Only 16 of the 30 homepages link to fees. It is the question applicants ask most.

How we did it

  • The list: universities on Wikipedia's list of universities in Zambia, plus a few recently chartered ones. We dropped three: two had no official website we could confirm, and one is a South African college. One homepage did not load. That left 30: 8 public and 22 private.
  • The capture: each official homepage was captured once on 26 September 2026, including its text, links and page code. We checked the homepage only, not inner pages.
  • What counted: a WhatsApp link means a wa.me, wa.link or api.whatsapp.com link. A live chat means a known chat widget, such as Tawk.to, Tidio or Botpress, or a WhatsApp chat button. Image file names containing the word "WhatsApp" did not count.
  • What we did not do: we did not message or contact any institution.
  • Limits: this is one snapshot. A chat widget that loads very late could be missed.

We are not naming institutions. The point is the pattern, not a league table. We will run the same check again before the January 2027 intake and publish any change.
